Introduction
On September 6, 2024, SYAPD successfully carried out a tree planting and environmental awareness campaign at the 20th December School, located in the Waaberi District. This initiative was part of SYAPD’s ongoing efforts to promote environmental sustainability and raise awareness about the importance of preserving the environment among the younger generation.

Tree Planting Activity
The event began with a tree planting activity aimed at improving the greenery and environment around the school. A variety of tree species were planted within the school compound to enhance the natural surroundings and provide shade for students. The school administration, teachers, and students participated enthusiastically in the activity.

Environmental Awareness Campaign
Following the tree planting, SYAPD conducted an environmental awareness session for the students. The campaign focused on educating the students about the significance of environmental conservation, deforestation’s impact, and their role in protecting their environment. Introduction

In 2021, Somali Youth Ambassadors for Peace and Democracy (SYAPD) organized a series of meetings and awareness campaigns in Hananbuur Village. These efforts aimed to address and mitigate the aftermath of conflicts between two local clans. The initiative was part of SYAPD’s broader mission to promote peace, reconciliation, and sustainable development in Somalia.

The inter-clan conflicts in Hananbuur had escalated to a critical level, resulting in loss of lives, displacement of families, and disruption of daily life. Recognizing the urgent need for intervention, SYAPD mobilized resources and engaged with local leaders to design a comprehensive strategy for peacebuilding. This initiative was not only about resolving immediate tensions but also about establishing a foundation for long-term peace and stability in the community.

In July 2022, a significant awareness campaign was conducted in Eldibir Village, Hobyo District, focusing on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). The campaign aimed to educate and empower 32 females in the village, raising awareness about the consequences and prevention of GBV and FGM. This report provides an overview of the activities, methodologies, and outcomes of the awareness campaign.

 Objectives

  1. Raise Awareness: Educate the participants about GBV and FGM, including definitions, types, causes, and effects.
  2. Empower Women: Equip the females with knowledge and skills to recognize, resist, and report GBV and FGM.
  3. Community Engagement: Encourage community dialogue and support systems to prevent GBV and FGM.

Collaborative Efforts and Support

This training initiative was made possible through the invaluable support of UNFPA Somalia and IRIESEHUB. In collaboration with Dalbile, SYAPD is steadfastly working to mitigate violence against women and empower the community to take a stand against GBV. The partnership highlights the collective effort required to address such deeply entrenched issues and underscores the importance of community involvement in achieving lasting change.

Methodology

The awareness campaign employed a participatory approach, involving various activities to engage the participants actively. The methodologies included:

  1. Workshops: Conducted interactive workshops where participants were introduced to the concepts of GBV and FGM, their legal implications, and support systems available.
  2. Group Discussions: Facilitated group discussions to allow participants to share their experiences and perspectives on GBV and FGM.
  3. Role-Playing: Used role-playing scenarios to help participants understand the dynamics of GBV and FGM and practice response strategies.
  4. Educational Materials: Distributed pamphlets, brochures, and posters with information on GBV and FGM.

Implemented a comprehensive Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) program

In 2020, Somali Youth Ambassadors for Peace and Democracy (SYAPD) implemented a comprehensive Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) program. This initiative aimed to equip young Somalis with essential skills to enhance their employability and contribute to the country’s socio-economic development. The program was meticulously designed to address the growing demand for skilled labor in various industries and to promote gender equality by encouraging female participation. A total of 42 students participated in the program, including 17 females and 25 males.
The TVET program spanned several months, involving both theoretical and practical training sessions. It was structured to provide hands-on experience and real-world applications of the skills learned. The curriculum was developed in collaboration with industry experts to ensure that the training met the current market needs and standards.
The participants were selected based on their interest in vocational training and their potential to benefit from the program. The selection process also aimed to include a diverse group of students from different socio-economic backgrounds to promote inclusivity and equal opportunity.
Throughout the training period, the students received mentorship and guidance from experienced trainers. They were also provided with the necessary tools and materials to facilitate effective learning. Additionally, the program included modules on entrepreneurship and business management to equip the students with the knowledge to start their own ventures.
The program’s success was measured by the students’ progress and their ability to apply the skills in real-world scenarios. Regular assessments and evaluations were conducted to monitor the students’ development and to make necessary adjustments to the training methods.
The SYAPD TVET program of 2020 not only aimed to provide immediate skills training but also to instill a lifelong learning mindset in the participants, encouraging them to continue developing their skills even after the program concluded. This holistic approach was intended to create a sustainable impact on the participants’ lives and contribute to the broader goal of economic growth and stability in Somalia.

On February 29th, 2024, Somalia Youth Ambassadors for Peace & Democracy (SYAPD) successfully completed a four-day Peace Training Activity in Mogadishu. Organized in partnership with Irise Hub and Dalbile Youth Initiative, the training aimed to enhance the capacity of SYAPD employees in peace sustainability and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) protection.

Training Overview

The program, held at the Banadir Research and Evaluation Center, included comprehensive discussions and activities focused on:

  • GBV protection

A total of 11 SYAPD employees participated in this capacity-building training, gaining valuable insights and skills to further their efforts in promoting peace and protecting against GBV in their communities.
